In our society, there is a "little game" that is as ridiculous as it is universally known, yet those who play it swear the world is blind and nobody knows a thing. We are talking about those married couples who have been separated "in fact" for 5, 10, or 15 years, but absolutely refuse to sign the divorce papers just to avoid backing down or out of pure material self-interest. Behind cheap excuses like "I don't have time because of work," "my kids don't want us to," or "why waste money on lawyers," lies a toxic mix of pride, foolishness, and greed.
People fail to realize that marriage under the law does not freeze. Leaving things "as they are" means building a legal time bomb. Worst of all—and the real underlying truth of this game—is that the side partners do not get involved out of love. They get involved because they know that the married person comes with a "financial life insurance policy" tied to their ex. A married cheater with money will never run out of suitors, but it is not because of their good looks; it is because they are legally tied to a wealthy ex-spouse.
Below, we break down without complications the two different cases of this massive lie and how Costa Rican family law ends up rewarding the shameless.
CASE 1: When the Man Is the Cheater and the Wife Stays "Asleep" (The Goldmine for the Side Partner)
